Once, I was a girl

Once, I was a prophet

Back before I ever bit my nails

Once, I felt the sting

Of not quite feeling wanted

Back before the torture became tales

Once, I was a witness

Once, I played philosopher

Back before I bothered to compare

Once, I was a child

Using ambition as a buffer

Between what I knew was true

and what was fair.
