A Walk Around

I wake before the rest of them

Rested yet still restless

I make the coffee

stir in sugar

and brush away my mess

I pull over my cardigan

And tighten my loose laces

Step into the sharp chill

Preparing for my paces

The creatures take advantage

Of the eve to daily dodging

scattered searching for a serving

adding layers to their lodging

I carry myself cautious

Do my best to not offend

(Still scared a squirrel who didn't see me

as I walked around the bend)

The treetops are alight

With the fiery hue of day

Sunrise slowly shifting

As the colors all decay

I swing my arms on purpose

Try to embrace taking space

Stretch as far in all directions

As my heart's willing to chase

And as I end my morning walk

I stop and listen one last time

to the song of subtle silence

nature's rare and certain rhyme
