Neighbor Boys

I can hear the neighbor boys

Playing in the yard

It must be someone’s birthday

Or a sleepover

I think back to me and the neighbor boy

Playing in that yard

Got to use his trampoline

But got no closure

I met him when I moved in

He was only a year younger

I liked how he was game

To play pretend

But then we got to high school

And to this day I still wonder

Why our make-believe bond

Came to an end.

Then time grew wide

Heard his mom died

By then

I was estranged

He moved away

I went to school

His backyard’s view

Had changed

They built a fence

New faces came

New neighbor boys

At play

I hope they don’t trip

On the indents

That the trampoline

Made.
